Time frame for plan: Spring 2010 – Spring 2011
Topic selected: Integration of Academic Content and Teaching Methods
Rationale for Selecting Topic:
Greater emphasis continues to bear down on CTC’s to integrate academic teaching into career & technical education to improve overall student performance as indicated on PSSA tests.
Essential Question:
Will integrating academic learning strategies result in improved student performance?
Related Questions:
Where is there room in the curriculum for enhanced academic learning strategies?
What levels of academic needs are identified in the classroom student population?
What strategies can be used to improve student comprehension of academic standards?
Will use of the strategies impair the current amount of curriculum covered?
Professional Goals:
Identify areas within the curriculum that are using eligible academic standards.
Observe strategies used in the school by other teachers.
Work with an identified experienced teacher to develop tools to use in the classroom to improve academic achievement.
Learner-Centered Goals:
Student classroom test scores increase by 5%.
Standardized test scores increase by 5%.
Baseline Data:
A baseline will be established using the scores from this year’s NOCTI exam and PSSA scores and current 2009-2010 knowledge-based grades.
Action Plan (Intervention):
I am going to start meeting with members of my peer group, specifically the math instructor, because my program has been identified by PDE to incorporate T-charts into my curriculum. What I hope to do with the math department’s help during these peer group meetings is to enhance my delivery techniques to enable my students to better understand how to accomplish math related tasks and help them understand that they learned all the math competencies before and that this is how we can relate them to our trade.
I also am looking to improve my students’ writing ability. They can write fairly well technically, but lack the ability to formalize expanded thoughts well. I plan on taking a course at the local IU over the summer, Improving Writing Skills (Paragraph Development) Using Inspiration Graphic Organizers. I hope that the techniques that I acquire will aid in the students’ ability to expand on topics in their writing. I know they can do it, because they can talk at great length about the subjects. The students simply seem to lack the ability to string together elaborate cohesive thoughts.
Documentation:
The summary of the base line data and a comparison of the post results data will be collated and compared at the conclusion of the 2010-2011 school year.
Methods of Evaluation:
To be compiled by averaging all student scores and comparing them to overall knowledge grade scores in shop along with an analysis of student NOCTI and PSSA scores from the 2010 and 2011 school year.
